What is Herpes?

Herpes is a virus that can spread from person to person through skin-to-skin contact. There are 2 types of Herpes. 

• Herpes simplex virus type 1.The virus that usually causes cold sores.
• Herpes simplex virus type 2 The virus which usually causes genital herpes

Genital herpes is usually caused by HSV-2 , but is increasingly being caused by HSV-1 because of the rising popularity of oral sex.Genital herpes is a common STD (sexually transmitted disease) that effects 1 in 8 people. Genital herpes is twice as common in adult women (1 in 6) as in adult men (1 in 12).  80% of people caring the genital herpes virus do not know they have it and in turn unknowingly passed onto their partners. In fact 65% of people claim that there partners didn't know they had it. Hence it was passed on in the viral shedding phase (It is when the virus has "Surfaced" to the skin, no lesion is apparent though the virus is considered contagious during this period).

WHAT DOES GENITAL HERPES LOOK LIKE

The skin can become red and tender. Then swelling may occur until small blisters appear. They can also appear as a small cut on the surface of the skin. Sometimes they gather in a larger blister. The blisters can be transparent, whitish or yellowish.  The appearance of the blisters also may change size, shape or color or appear in a different locations.For men and woman they can appear anywhere in the genital area including the anus.

HERPES SYMPTOMS

The most common symptoms of genital herpes includes

• • Itching in the genital area
  • Tingling at the base of the spine and genital area
    
  • Redness
  • Pains in the legs and groin
  • Vaginal discharge
  
  These are usually followed by one or more of the following:
  
  • Chafing
  • A distinct rash
  • Small cracks in the skin
  • Tiny sores
  • Blisters that burst and become painful ulcers
  Genital herpes symptoms can be easily mistaken for other conditions such as: Thrush. They have same similar symptoms.
  

HERPES TRIGGERS: 

The main trigger for causing outbreaks are:

• Stress, emotional or physical
• Fatigue
• Menstrual cycle
• Drinking a lot of alcohol
• Poor nutrition
• Being run down
• Sickness

It is said that outbreaks are our bodies way of letting us know we are stressed or not coping with our current situation. And that we need to make change.
